Questions

Questions I'm often asked

I've had some good questions over the years. Here are the ones that come up most, with my answers.

The pipes
Who makes the pipes?

I do. I make every set by hand, one at a time, in my own workshop.

Does an exotic wood cost more?

Not much. Turning and finishing take far more time than the difference in the cost of the wood, so the list price covers most combinations. A full Highland set in African Blackwood with pink ivory mounts, for example, costs the standard full-set price.

What comes with a drones-only Highland set?

The drones with reeds, the blowpipe and the chanter stock. It's a good choice if you already have a chanter you're happy with.

Do you make bois d'arc pipes?

Yes. Bois d'arc, also called Osage orange or horse apple, is one of the woods I offer, including for practice chanters.

Medieval & Renaissance pipes
What key are the medieval pipes in?

I currently make them in A. The drones retune without touching the reed: fully extended they play A and E, pushed down B and F, and with the middle sections removed D and A. There's more on the medieval pipes page.

Can the chanter use open fingering?

Yes. I can set it up for modern Highland fingering, which gives a Mixolydian scale on A from low G to high A, or for open fingering, which will feel more familiar if you play recorder or whistle.

Can you make flared drone ends like Corvus Corax pipes?

Yes, I can turn trumpet-style terminations, though not the very large eight-inch flares. Historically, flared ends appear from the Renaissance onwards rather than on true medieval pipes. My standard is a chambered end, as I find the drones blend better with the chanter. If you want the look of a large flare, I can leave the bell fuller on the outside while keeping the bore inside the same.

Can you make a set in C, or a keyed chanter?

Not at the moment, I'm afraid.
