   Have you tried to osage orange (bois arc) (horse apple) or whatever other names it goes by.

   I’m a novice at this point, but am wondering was there anything particularly different between the pipes used by Highland troops in World War I and modern? I know there are a great many modern sets of pipes in plastic poly, but besides those?

   I’m a living historian/reenactor, and I don’t want to ultimately buy a set that is totally wrong for that era.

   A very good question! Fortunately you can still get pipes that were actually made back in the 1910’s and 1920’s so if you do some looking around you should be to buy a set for not much more than a new set. I’ve seen restored pipes from that era sell for around 2000 in from some places.

   If you want a new set made in that style there are a number of makers that still produce a pipe that is exactly as it was 90 years ago look wise.
